Hemp’s main nutritional advantage over other seeds lies in the composition of its oil i.e. its fatty acid profile and in its protein which contains all of the essential amino acids in the best possible ratio. Omega-3 and Omega-6 are essential fatty acids (EFAs) which are vital for human existence and almost all functions of the body. Since the body cannot produce these two EFAs, we must obtain them from food; and whilst Omega-6 is more easily available, Omega-3 has been noted to be significantly lacking from Western diets. Hemp offers an Omega -6/ Omega-3 ratio of 3:1, which is considered optimal for human health. The US Institute of Health has indeed demonstrated that this EFA balance can contribute to a reduced risk of heart disease, cancers, arthritis, high blood pressure and mood disorders. Hemp is one of the few foods that delivers such high concentrations of EFAs and in such favourable proportions.
Another standout attribute of hemp is that 65% of its protein is a globulin called edestin: a protein that also occurs in our blood. Globulins are indispensible for a healthy immune system as they are used in the production of antibodies, which attack foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses. With hemp providing the largest quantity of edestin in the plant kingdom, it not only helps in maintaining the body’s immunity, but can also assist those who are suffering from diseases related to immune deficiency.
Studies have also shown hemp to be an effective remedy for dermatological issues, and have demonstrated good results in healing chronic allergies and inflammatory diseases such as eczema and psoriasis. It is also the only edible seed containing gamma-linolenic acid which is beneficial in treating the symptoms of PMS and menopause.
As well as being a sustainable source of protein with hardly any cholesterol-raising saturated fats, hemp is noted for being highly digestible and has not been associated with the dietary intolerances that often accompany other plant-based proteins like wheat and soy.
Our organic hulled hemp seeds are an excellent way to boost protein intake. Unique in their composition of essential fatty acids, hemps seeds offer the optimal ratio of Omega-6 and Omega-3 nutrients. Their distinct nutty flavour makes them a delicious and healthy addition to any salad, dressing or smoothie.
